Master HOPE: workshop on Humanitarian Finance and Logistics. Communication in Emergencies
The workshop “Humanitarian Finance and Logistics. Communication in Emergencies” was held in Rome for Master HOPE – Humanitarian Operations in Emergencies, Managing Projects, People Administration & Logistic in the Field from the 17th to the 19th of May 2019. The meetings were led by Leonardo Palma (Logistics Coordinator for INTERSOS), Lodovico Mariani (Senior Adviser of Master HOPE and Finance and Administration Director of Amref Health Italia), Filippo Ungaro (Director of Master FRAME and Director of Communications, Campaigning and Volunteer of Save the Children Italy).
Leonardo Palma talked about “The role of logistics in a humanitarian intervention”, explaining in detail what the everyday work of a logistician is like in a crisis context, sharing interesting anecdotes and giving the class some useful tools to use while working in emergencies.
Next, Filippo Ungaro started an interactive lesson with the fellows on “Communication in Emergencies”. One of the first questions Ungaro asked was “What is the situation about kidnapped children in the country?”. After a detailed explanation of the rules of communication in emergency contexts, students were divided in work groups and pretended to be the operators of an NGO in Yemen, ready to answer to the questions of a journalist.
Lodovico Mariani closed his workshop with an exercise on Disaster Risk Management. Fellows built a logical framework matrix in emergency contexts. They created a budget structure and a GANTT diagram, fundamental elements in the Third Sector.
By the end of the cycle of workshops, fellows were highly trained on how to communicate in emergencies, on the functioning of logistics in a humanitarian crisis, on the application of financial management practices.
