Introduction<\/strong><\/p>\n

In 1998 the \u2018Nonprofit Manager<\/a>\u2019<\/strong> was the first book in Europe focused on the professional profile, tools and mindset of this strange-\u2018social race\u2019 of emerging manager.<\/p>\n

Peter Druker<\/strong> had already published many articles and books in the US, more focused on culture and strategy. Therefore, I felt the need to be very practical on the tools but also to give some \u2018insight\u2019 about the culture and the context in which these tools would be used.\u00a0 I had heard Peter saying \u2018Culture eats strategy for breakfast<\/strong>\u2019<\/em> and I knew it was true. Culture \u201ceats\u201d not only the strategies but also the tools- just like a plant (the tools) when planted in a good or bad soil (the culture).<\/p>\n

The \u201cnonprofit manager\u201d book project was immediately accepted by Sperling & Kupfer<\/strong>, a leading Italian management publisher – one month after they received\u00a0 my proposal, which was the first and only one I had sent for the book.\u00a0 I had a plan of course, but did not expected such a quick and enthusiastic approbation by the editor. In the meantime, I was already a very busy father with my first\u00a0 two fantastic small children (Sophia 3 and Giordano 1 years old) and I was greatly engaged as a \u2018nonprofit manager\u2019 with\u00a0 the start up \u2018ASVI\u2019: \u00a0I then had very little time to write it!<\/p>\n

But writing \u2018The non-profit manager\u2019<\/strong> at the end was important for many colleagues, who \u2018understood\u2019 to be not only \u2018social workers\u2019 but also \u201cmanagers\u201d<\/strong>, with responsibilities not only for the \u2018service delivery\u2019<\/strong> of their organizations but also for the wellbeing of their people, for the independency from public sector by building the \u2018funding mix\u2019, for managing motivation and satisfaction within the organizations, being aware and managing the \u2018stakeholders’ relationship. Finally, they were more aware of the tools and of the context.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Most of them did not consider themselves as \u2018managers\u2019 but just as \u2018members, professionals\u2019.<\/strong> This was (and still now!) a very dangerous mistake,\u00a0 firstly because you did not clearly take the responsibility of your role (i.e. looking for consensus rather than for the \u2018right decision\u2019, feeling responsible for paying salary at the end of the month and not months later, and so on). Secondly, they were not studying as a managers. I can tell you that being a non-profit manager is much more difficult<\/strong> than being a for-profit manager – people inside the organization are as important as the external beneficiaries, the donors, the Ethic and the incomes too\u2026Therefore, you have many more stakeholders that really need to be well managed , and many \u2018plans\u2019 to be aligned. So, many manager thinking to be something else, no tools, no awareness. It was a real mess, when we started!<\/p>\n

Therefore, I am happy to start together with you this journey<\/strong> in the non profit management mind-set, environment, story and, of course, \u00a0tools.<\/strong><\/p>\n
