Alexandro is 24 years old and with the help of Social Change School\u2019s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.socialchangeschool.org\/en\/didattica\/career-development\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Career Development Service<\/a><\/strong> had the opportunity to challenge himself with an experience on the field with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cefaonlus.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CEFA<\/a><\/strong> in a Civil Service project. Alex is now in <strong>Tanzania<\/strong>\u00a0and since November 2017 he has been working to create an impact by putting into practice the competences he gained during the Master.<strong> <br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Let\u2019s read his words about this new experience he decided to share with us:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-33038\" src=\"https:\/\/www.socialchangeschool.org\/it\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/04\/WP_20171223_14_00_16_Pro-e1522938935732.jpg\" alt=\"#StoriedalCampo: Alexandro, in Tanzania con CEFA per un progetto sul Waste Management\" width=\"350\" height=\"197\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cRight now I am in Matembwe, a little village right above Njombe, very small and far away from the capital. A very small village of barely 3000 souls, where each day is like the other, because nothing happens. Where there is nothing. Where half of the habitants works, while the other half just watches as time goes by. Where landscapes are so sensational that every time you look at them you are completely astounded. \u00a0Where people are poor, but have dignity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Maybe this is the thing that caught my attention the most: in a place where the average wage is around 40 \u20ac per month, people have a<strong> dignity in their everyday lives<\/strong> that I would have never imagined. They have so little, but this does not worry them; they go around with their broken Chinese motorcycles, wear old, dirty and worn-out clothes, have a general level of education and are generally close-minded.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.socialchangeschool.org\/it\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/04\/WP_20180213_17_56_33_Pro-e1522939034860.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-33039\" src=\"https:\/\/www.socialchangeschool.org\/it\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/04\/WP_20180213_17_56_33_Pro-e1522939034860.jpg\" alt=\"#StoriedalCampo: Alexandro, in Tanzania con CEFA per un progetto sul Waste Management\" width=\"350\" height=\"197\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Everything is different in the city, there\u2019s much more education, an oasis of wealth, but the rest is a huge slum, is chaos. Everything is beautiful and perfect where we live, while the village is a little in the South and that\u2019s where our office is, so I really see the difference between our reality and the village\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The impact with this world \u2013 because it truly is another planet \u2013 was and still is much harder than what I expected. The cultural distance that divides us is massive, and this makes the habitants of Matembwe at the same time curious and suspicious, particularly of the \u201cwestern black people\u201d like me, as they can\u2019t imagine black people who don\u2019t have their own customs.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Some days ago, I met an Italian woman, Anna, who won the Best Italian Cooperator in the field Award. She lives here with her two Tanzanian sons and partner.\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-33040\" src=\"https:\/\/www.socialchangeschool.org\/it\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/04\/IMG-20171231-WA0001-e1522939214257.jpg\" alt=\"#StoriedalCampo: Alexandro, in Tanzania con CEFA per un progetto sul Waste Management\" width=\"350\" height=\"263\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">I was smoking a cigarette with her, when her 5-year-old son arrived and had this shocked expression on his face. He was shocked because I\u00a0was speaking Italian \u2013 and he had never seen a black person speaking Italian before \u2013 and also because I was smoking, since here almost nobody smokes. And he started saying \u201cNo, you cannot smoke, because you are African\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">All of my expectations were completely off: <strong>I didn\u2019t think everything would be so different<\/strong>, that the distance would be so extensive.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">From the working side, <strong>I am finding step by step all the things I have studied and practiced during the Master<\/strong>, so I am really learning how to put everything into practice. I am <strong>writing a project on Waste Management<\/strong> \u2013 recycling plastic and waste material. The topic is very noticeable in Tanzania, as the use of plastic has quadrupled, and yet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.socialchangeschool.org\/it\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/04\/WP_20171205_18_21_46_Pro-e1522939593785.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-33042\" src=\"https:\/\/www.socialchangeschool.org\/it\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/04\/WP_20171205_18_21_46_Pro-e1522939593785.jpg\" alt=\"#StoriedalCampo: Alexandro, in Tanzania con CEFA per un progetto sul Waste Management\" width=\"350\" height=\"197\" \/><\/a>it doesn\u2019t exist an apparatus of waste collection and disposal, this material is simply burned \u2013 an extremely harmful process. Our solution is to recycle plastic with the use of 3D printers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">I work on many things, particularly on writing the project: <strong>activities, budget, accountancy, petty cash book, search calls for funding<\/strong>\u2026 In the office we are four people, so we don\u2019t have well-defined roles; engineers mainly work on the technical part, while the other person and I work more on writing project.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Thanks to the modules we studied during the Master, <strong>I feel like I have the right competences <\/strong>to properly face the various phases of writing the project, as I have already encountered everything during the Master, and the theory perfectly matches what I am actually doing, as the methods are the same\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Let\u2019s have a look at what happens on the field, with the eyes of someone who right now is living an experience in Tanzania with the NGOs. \u00a0 Alexandro Frizzi Osabuohien\u00a0is a young ex fellow of Master PMC \u2013 Project Management for International Cooperation, Euro-Project Management and Local Development.
